About

This blog is inspired by Ela’s Art Splash blog, and very much following in her footsteps. I really miss it!

Keeping an eye on contemporary art around the world, and featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation and other media from the latest exhibitions.

I absolutely do not have time to keep this blog up, so apologies in advance if it flags or falls by the wayside.

I’m Johnnynorms, creative doodler and songwriting singer of The Many Few.

Here’s me and a glimpse of my own shennanigans:

Thinking behind the blog

So, I modelled Open Art Doors after Ela’s Art Splash blog. We obviously are passionate about contemporary art in all its guises.

It’s a sign-post website, covering as much as possible. I rarely make comments, though if I had time I would be writing as much critique & debate as possible – it doesn’t come easy with me though.

I did the groundwork first – assembled a personal portal of galleries grouped by place.

The aim is for global coverage, but I accept there’s more galleries clustered in places like London and New York.

To be organised as possible, I write lists of forthcoming exhibitions on pieces of paper, a page per month.

I don’t try and cover everything – for me it has to be subjective, and I choose what appeals.

Painting and sculpture are the most visually immediate, but I try to include other media like video, installation, conceptual, etc – these can be very rewarding if you dig a bit deeper.

In the absence of actual permission,  I include a link back to the gallery, and copyright information & photo credits where I see them. I hope this is adequate courtesy.

I tag & label everything, so that past posts might be retrieved in a meaningful way. (Not sure if this has worked – but it’s a habit anyway).

The future?

I haven’t got time to do this blog, and I feel it will come to a natural end – maybe after 3 years, or when my free image upload runs out. If I upgraded to get more image upload, I would have to include targetted ads to justify the cost, so I probably won’t do that.

The galleries

Below is the list of galleries I currently check (more have fallen by the wayside since I began). I am London-based, hence the list starts with London/UK.

Feel free to suggest galleries that could be added – it helps if they have a functional website.
